Shame can hold us back from embracing our true worth from "summary" of Atlas of the Heart by Brené Brown

Shame is a powerful force that can keep us from fully recognizing our own value. It has the ability to make us feel small, unworthy, and insignificant. When we are consumed by shame, we are unable to see ourselves clearly. We are blinded to our own worth and potential. Shame convinces us that we are not good enough, that we don't deserve love or acceptance. It tells us that we are fundamentally flawed, irredeemable. And so, we hide ourselves away, afraid to let others see the truth of who we are. We put on masks, pretending to be someone we are not in order to avoid the pain of rejection and judgment. But when we allow shame to dictate our actions and choices, we are denying ourselves the opportunity to live authentically. We are denying ourselves the chance to embrace our true worth. We are denying ourselves the chance to connect with others in a meaningful way. In order to break free from the grip of shame, we must be willing to confront it head-on. We must be willing to challenge the beliefs that shame has instilled in us. We must be willing to take a hard look at ourselves and see past the distortions that shame has created. Only then can we begin to see ourselves as we truly are – flawed, yes, but also inherently valuable and deserving of love and respect. Only then can we begin to embrace our true worth and live our lives with authenticity and purpose.
