Ideas arise from impressions through mental processes from "summary" of A Treatise of Human Nature by David Hume
According to the principles of human nature, our thoughts and ideas are ultimately derived from our impressions. Impressions are the more lively perceptions of the mind, such as our sensations, emotions, and passions. These impressions leave a lasting impact on our minds, which then give rise to the formation of ideas. When we reflect on our past experiences and memories, we are essentially reactivating our impressions in a more subdued and less vivid manner. This process of reflecting on our impressions is what leads to the creation of ideas. For example, when we remember the feeling of pain from a past injury, we are recalling the original impression of that pain. Our mental processes play a crucial role in transforming our impressions into ideas. These mental processes involve various faculties of the mind, such as memory, imagination, and reasoning. Memory allows us to retain our impressions over time, while imagination helps us to combine and manipulate these impressions to form new ideas. Furthermore, our reasoning faculty enables us to make sense of our impressions and draw logical connections between them. Through these mental processes, our impressions are transformed and organized into coherent and meaningful ideas. In this way, our ideas are ultimately rooted in our original impressions, even though they may be more complex and abstract than the original perceptions.- The relationship between impressions and ideas is fundamental to understanding the workings of the human mind. By recognizing the role that impressions play in shaping our thoughts and perceptions, we can gain insight into the processes that underlie our mental experiences. Ultimately, our ideas are a reflection of our impressions, filtered through the lens of our mental faculties.
