Value inner peace over external achievements from "summary" of Zen Mind, Beginner's Mind by Shunryu Suzuki

In practicing Zen, we learn to let go of our attachment to external achievements and instead focus on cultivating inner peace. This means shifting our perspective from constantly seeking validation and success in the external world to finding contentment and fulfillment within ourselves. When we place more value on inner peace, we are less affected by the ups and downs of life, and we are able to maintain a sense of calm and equanimity in the face of challenges and setbacks. By prioritizing inner peace over external achievements, we free ourselves from the endless cycle of striving for more and more. We begin to appreciate the present moment for what it is, rather than constantly looking towards the future for fulfillment. This shift in mindset allows us to find joy and satisfaction in the simple things in life, rather than constantly seeking validation from external sources. In Zen practice, we are encouraged to let go of our ego-driven desires and instead focus on being fully present in each moment. This means letting go of our attachment to our accomplishments and instead learning to be content with who we are, regardless of external validation. When we can find peace within ourselves, we are no longer dependent on external sources of validation for our sense of self-worth. When we value inner peace over external achievements, we are able to live more authentically and in alignment with our true selves. We are not swayed by the opinions of others or by societal standards of success. Instead, we are guided by our own inner wisdom and intuition, allowing us to make decisions that are true to ourselves. In the practice of Zen, we learn to find peace within ourselves, rather than seeking it in external accomplishments. This shift in perspective allows us to live more fully and authentically, free from the constant need for validation from the outside world. By prioritizing inner peace, we are able to cultivate a sense of contentment and fulfillment that is not dependent on external circumstances.
