When we talk about trust in the inherent goodness of human nature, we are actually talking about trusting ourselves. We are talking about trusting our own innate wisdom and compassion, which are always present within us, no matter how obscured they may seem at times. This trust is not something we need to acquire or attain; rather, it is something we need to recognize and cultivate. In Zen practice, we learn to trust in the inherent goodness of human nature by letting go of our preconceived ideas and judgments about ourselves and others. We learn to see ourselves and others with fresh eyes, free from the distortions of our conditioning and past experiences. This means approaching each moment with an open mind and an open heart, ready to meet whatever arises with curiosity and compassion. When we trust in the inherent goodness of human nature, we are able to let go of our habitual patterns of doubt, fear, and self-centeredness. We are able to see beyond our limited sense of self and connect with the boundless potential that exists within each of us. This is not to say that we ignore the challenges and difficulties of life, but rather that we approach them with a sense of openness and resilience, knowing that we have the capacity to meet whatever comes our way. Trusting in the inherent goodness of human nature also means trusting in the interconnectedness of all beings. It means recognizing that we are not separate from each other or from the world around us, but rather deeply interconnected in ways that we may not always understand. This sense of interconnectedness can inspire us to act with kindness and generosity, knowing that our actions have ripple effects that can benefit not only ourselves but also others.
