Practice compassion and kindness towards yourself and others from "summary" of Zen Mind, Beginner's Mind by Shunryu Suzuki

When we talk about compassion and kindness, we are not talking about being kind just to others. We should also be kind to ourselves. This may sound simple, but it is not always easy to do. We tend to be very hard on ourselves, always pushing ourselves to be better, to do more. But this constant striving can be exhausting and unhealthy. We need to learn to treat ourselves with the same kindness and compassion that we would show to a friend in need. When we are kind and compassionate towards ourselves, we are better able to extend that kindness and compassion to others. It is like the saying, "You can't pour from an empty cup." We need to take care of ourselves first so that we have the energy and capacity to care for others. This is not a selfish act, but a necessary one in order to be truly present and helpful to those around us. In Zen practice, cultivating compassion and kindness is essential. It is not just a lofty ideal, but a practical way of living in the world. When we are kind and compassionate towards ourselves and others, we create a more harmonious and peaceful environment. This is not just beneficial for those around us, but also for our own well-being. It is important to remember that practicing compassion and kindness is a process. It is not something that happens overnight, but something that we must cultivate and nurture over time. Just like any skill, it takes practice and dedication. But the more we practice, the easier it becomes to be kind and compassionate towards ourselves and others. So let us take this teaching to heart and strive to be more compassionate and kind in our thoughts, words, and actions. Let us be gentle with ourselves and with others, knowing that this is the true path to inner peace and harmony.
