Embrace uncertainty and openness from "summary" of Zen Mind, Beginner's Mind by Shunryu Suzuki

When we practice Zen meditation, it is important to have a mind that is open and free from preconceived notions. This means that we must be willing to embrace uncertainty and not cling to fixed ideas or beliefs. In Zen, we learn to let go of our need for certainty and instead cultivate a spirit of openness and curiosity. Uncertainty is a natural part of life, and it is only by accepting this reality that we can truly be present in the moment. When we are open to uncertainty, we are able to see things as they truly are, without the filter of our own biases or expectations. This allows us to approach each moment with a sense of freshness and wonder, as if experiencing it for the first time. In Zen, we are encouraged to approach each moment with a beginner's mind, free from preconceptions or judgments. This means letting go of our need to have all the answers and instead embracing the unknown. When we are open to uncertainty, we are able to see the world with new eyes and engage with it in a more authentic and meaningful way.
  1. We can cultivate a sense of humility and receptivity that allows us to learn and grow in every moment. This attitude of openness can help us to navigate the challenges and uncertainties of life with grace and ease. Ultimately, it is through embracing uncertainty that we can find true freedom and peace in our lives.
