Desensitization happens from "summary" of Your Brain on Porn by Gary Wilson
Desensitization happens when the brain gets overstimulated by a constant stream of novelty and intensity. This can occur when someone consumes a large amount of pornography, particularly internet pornography. The brain is not designed to handle this level of stimulation, leading to desensitization over time. When desensitization occurs, individuals may find that they need more extreme or novel content to achieve the same level of arousal. This can lead to a cycle of escalation, where what was once considered shocking or taboo becomes the new normal. As a result, healthy, real-life sexual experiences may no longer be as satisfying or appealing. The brain's reward system also plays a role in desensitization. When exposed to high levels of stimulation, the brain releases dopamine, a neurotransmitter associated with pleasure and reward. Over time, the brain may become desensitized to dopamine, requiring even more intense stimulation to achieve the same level of pleasure. This can lead to a vicious cycle of seeking out increasingly extreme content. Desensitization can also affect the brain's ability to form and maintain intimate relationships. When individuals become accustomed to the rapid-fire novelty of internet pornography, they may struggle to connect with real-life partners on a deep emotional level. This can lead to feelings of isolation, loneliness, and dissatisfaction in relationships. In order to reverse desensitization, individuals may need to take a break from pornography and allow their brains to reset. This process, known as "rebooting," involves abstaining from porn and other artificial sexual stimuli for a period of time. By doing so, individuals may find that their sensitivity to natural sexual cues increases, leading to a more fulfilling and satisfying sex life.- Desensitization is a common occurrence for individuals who consume large amounts of pornography. By understanding how desensitization happens and taking steps to reverse it, individuals can reclaim control over their sexual health and well-being.
