Routines become automatic through practice from "summary" of Your Brain at Work by David Rock
When we repeatedly perform a series of actions, our brains form neural pathways that make those actions easier to execute. This process is known as automaticity, and it is what allows us to carry out tasks without having to consciously think about each step. Take driving a car, for example. When we first learn to drive, we have to pay close attention to everything - adjusting the mirrors, using the turn signals, checking blind spots. But with practice, these actions become so ingrained that we can do them almost effortlessly. Automaticity is a result of the brain's ability to streamline processes through repeated practice. When we perform a task over and over again, our brains become more efficient at carrying out that task. This efficiency comes from the brain's ability to create shortcuts and eliminate unnecessary steps. As a result, we are able to complete the task with less cognitive effort. The key to developing automaticity is practice. The more we practice a routine or task, the more automatic it becomes. This is because each repetition strengthens the neural pathways associated with that task, making it easier for our brains to access those pathways in the future. Over time, these pathways become so well-worn that they are activated almost involuntarily when we encounter a familiar situation. In order to develop automaticity, it is important to practice consistently and intentionally. By deliberately repeating a routine or task, we can train our brains to perform it automatically. This requires focus and attention in the beginning, but as we continue to practice, the task will become easier and more natural. Eventually, we will be able to execute it with minimal effort and without having to consciously think about each step.- We can free up cognitive resources for more complex thinking and problem-solving. This can lead to increased productivity, reduced stress, and overall improved performance in various areas of our lives.
