Financial stress can have profound effects on health. This is not just a matter of a headache here and there or a few sleepless nights. When we are under financial stress, our bodies go into overdrive. Our stress response system kicks into gear, releasing hormones like cortisol and adrenaline that are meant to help us deal with immediate threats - like a hungry lion looking for its next meal. This makes sense from an evolutionary standpoint - if you are running from a predator, your body doesn't need to be fighting off a cold at the same time. It can also impact our cardiovascular system, increasing our risk of heart disease and stroke. This is because the hormones released during times of stress can cause our blood pressure to rise and our blood vessels to constrict, putting extra strain on our hearts. Furthermore, financial stress can also affect our mental health. It has been linked to a higher risk of depression, anxiety, and other mental health disorders. This is because stress can alter the levels of neurotransmitters in our brains, leading to imbalances that can contribute to mood disorders.
