Insufficient sleep is associated with an increased risk of weight gain and obesity. The reasons for this are multifaceted and revolve around the impact of sleep on our hormones, metabolism, and behavior. One key hormone that is influenced by sleep is leptin, which acts as a signal to the brain that we have had enough to eat. When we are sleep deprived, leptin levels decrease, leading to an increase in hunger and a greater likelihood of overeating. Conversely, another hormone called ghrelin, which stimulates appetite, becomes more active with inadequate sleep. This double whammy of reduced leptin and increased ghrelin creates a perfect storm for weight gain. Furthermore, sleep deprivation disrupts the body's ability to regulate blood sugar levels, making it more likely to develop insulin resistance and ultimately, obesity.
