An abuser often works to cut his partner off from other people in her life. He may criticize her friends and family, telling her that they don't really care about her or that they are a bad influence on her. He might try to make her feel guilty for spending time with them, saying that she should be focusing all her attention on him instead. He may even create conflicts or drama whenever she tries to see them, making it harder and harder for her to maintain those relationships. This isolation serves several purposes for the abuser.
