Buddhism encourages acceptance of the present moment from "summary" of Why Buddhism is True by Robert Wright
The idea of accepting the present moment is a central tenet of Buddhism. This concept is not about being passive or resigned to whatever is happening in the present. Instead, it is about acknowledging the reality of the present moment without being consumed by it. It is about seeing things as they are, without judgment or attachment. Acceptance of the present moment is closely related to the Buddhist idea of impermanence. Everything in life is constantly changing, and clinging to any particular moment or experience only leads to suffering. By accepting the present moment, we can learn to let go of our attachments and expectations, and find peace and contentment in the midst of life's ups and downs. One of the reasons why we struggle to accept the present moment is because our minds are constantly wandering. We are often lost in thoughts about the past or the future, rather than fully engaging with what is happening right now. This tendency to be distracted by our thoughts is what Buddhists refer to as "monkey mind." Mindfulness meditation is a practice that can help us cultivate acceptance of the present moment. By focusing on our breath or other sensations, we can learn to quiet our monkey mind and be more fully present. Through mindfulness meditation, we can develop the ability to observe our thoughts and emotions without getting caught up in them. By accepting the present moment, we can also learn to be more compassionate towards ourselves and others. When we are not constantly judging or resisting what is happening, we can approach life with greater openness and kindness. This can lead to deeper connections with others and a greater sense of peace and well-being.- Acceptance of the present moment is about learning to live more fully and authentically. It is about letting go of our illusions and expectations, and embracing the reality of our lives as they are. In doing so, we can find a sense of freedom and joy that comes from being fully present in each moment.
