Healthy relationships can support good health from "summary" of When the Body Says No by Gabor Maté, MD

In the dance of connection and disconnection, the quality of our relationships can have a profound impact on our overall health and well-being. When we feel safe, loved, and supported in our relationships, our bodies can relax and function optimally. On the other hand, when we experience stress, conflict, or loneliness in our relationships, our bodies can respond with a cascade of physiological reactions that can compromise our health. Our bodies are finely tuned instruments that are constantly responding to the messages we receive from the world around us. When we are in healthy relationships, our bodies can operate in a state of balance and harmony, with our immune, nervous, and endocrine systems working together seamlessly to protect and heal us. However, when our relationships are characterized by tension, mistrust, or hostility, our bodies can be thrown into a state of chronic stress, which can weaken our immune system and make us more vulnerable to illness. The connections we have with others can also influence our behaviors and lifestyle choices, which in turn can impact our health. When we are surrounded by people who encourage and support us in making healthy choices, such as eating well, exercising regularly, and getting enough sleep, we are more likely to prioritize our health and well-being. Conversely, when we are in toxic or unsupportive relationships, we may engage in unhealthy coping mechanisms, such as overeating, substance abuse, or neglecting our self-care, which can have negative consequences for our health.
  1. Our relationships play a crucial role in shaping our physical, emotional, and mental health. By cultivating positive, nurturing relationships and setting boundaries with toxic or draining individuals, we can create a supportive environment that promotes our well-being. Ultimately, the quality of our relationships can be a key determinant of our overall health and vitality, reminding us that the body and mind are inseparable in their response to the world around us.
