Life is uncertain from "summary" of When Breath Becomes Air by Paul Kalanithi

Life is a precarious thing, full of unexpected twists and turns that can upend even the most carefully laid plans. One moment, everything may seem stable and secure, only to be shattered in an instant by the cruel hand of fate. This uncertainty is not just a concept to be pondered in the abstract; it is a harsh reality that confronts us all at some point in our lives. As human beings, we are constantly striving to make sense of the world around us, to find order in the chaos of existence. We create routines and rituals, build relationships and careers, all in an effort to create a sense of stability and predictability in our lives. But despite our best efforts, we are ultimately powerless in the face of the unknown. Illness, accidents, financial hardship – these are just a few examples of the myriad ways in which our lives can be thrown into disarray. We may think we have everything under control, that we have planned for every eventuality, only to have our world turned upside down in the blink of an eye. It is in these moments of crisis that the fragility of life becomes painfully apparent, reminding us of our own mortality. In my own journey, as I grappled with a terminal illness, I came face to face with the stark reality of life's uncertainty. All my years of education and training as a neurosurgeon could not prepare me for the devastating diagnosis that awaited me. The future I had envisioned for myself – a long and successful career, a loving family, a fulfilling life – was suddenly called into question, thrown into doubt by the specter of death. As I struggled to come to terms with my own mortality, I was forced to confront the profound uncertainty that lies at the heart of human existence. No amount of knowledge or expertise could shield me from the harsh realities of life and death. In the end, all we can do is to face the unknown with courage and grace, to embrace the uncertainty of our journey with open hearts and minds. So let us remember, as we navigate the unpredictable waters of life, that uncertainty is not something to be feared or avoided, but rather a natural part of the human experience. It is in the face of uncertainty that we discover our true strength and resilience, our capacity for growth and transformation. And it is in embracing the unknown that we truly learn what it means to be alive.
