The practice of meditation can alter our relationship to our thoughts from "summary" of Waking Up by Sam Harris

Meditation has the power to transform our relationship with our thoughts. When we sit down to meditate, we are instructed to simply observe the contents of our consciousness without getting caught up in them. This practice allows us to see our thoughts for what they truly are – fleeting mental events that come and go. As we continue to meditate, we begin to realize that we are not our thoughts. We are the observers of our thoughts. This shift in perspective can be incredibly liberating. We no longer feel compelled to react to every thought that arises in our mind. Instead, we can choose to let our thoughts come and go without getting entangled in them. Through meditation, we learn to cultivate a sense of mindfulness – a state of open and nonjudgmental awareness. This mindfulness allows us to see our thoughts more clearly and to relate to them in a healthier way. We begin to notice patterns in our thinking and to recognize when our thoughts are leading us down unhelpful paths. By developing this kind of self-awareness, we can break free from the endless cycle of rumination and worry that often plagues our minds. We become better equipped to deal with difficult emotions and challenging situations. Our thoughts no longer have the power to dictate our actions and our moods.
  1. The practice of meditation can lead to a profound shift in our relationship with our thoughts. We come to see that our thoughts are just one small part of our experience, rather than the defining feature of who we are. This newfound perspective can bring a sense of peace and clarity to our lives, allowing us to navigate the ups and downs of life with greater ease and resilience.
