Letting go of attachment is key to finding true happiness from "summary" of Waking Up by Sam Harris

The idea that letting go of attachment is key to finding true happiness is a common theme in many spiritual traditions. This concept can be difficult to understand, as it goes against our natural impulse to seek pleasure and avoid pain. However, as we delve deeper into our own minds through practices like meditation, we begin to see that attachment is the root cause of much of our suffering. Attachment is essentially the desire for things to be a certain way, whether it be relationships, possessions, or even our own thoughts and emotions. When we attach ourselves to these things, we become dependent on them for our sense of well-being. This dependency creates a constant state of craving and aversion, as we strive to hold onto what we want and push away what we don't want. The problem with attachment is that it is always fleeting. Relationships end, possessions break or get lost, and our thoughts and emotions are constantly changing. When we cling to these impermanent things, we set ourselves up for disappointment and frustration. True happiness, on the other hand, comes from within. It is not dependent on external circumstances, but rather on our own ability to find contentment in the present moment. By letting go of attachment, we free ourselves from the cycle of craving and aversion. We learn to accept things as they are, without trying to change them or make them conform to our desires. This does not mean that we become indifferent or passive, but rather that we approach life with a sense of openness and equanimity. Through practices like meditation, we can cultivate this quality of mind and learn to let go of attachment. As we do so, we begin to see that true happiness is not something to be pursued, but rather something that arises naturally when we are able to let go of our attachment to the things that bring us suffering. In this way, we can find a deep and lasting sense of peace and contentment that is not dependent on external circumstances.
