Embracing uncertainty can reduce anxiety from "summary" of Unwinding Anxiety by Judson Brewer

Humans have a natural tendency to seek certainty and avoid uncertainty. When faced with ambiguous situations, our brains automatically start looking for answers to reduce the discomfort that uncertainty brings. This seeking behavior is a survival instinct that has been hardwired into our brains over millions of years of evolution. However, this instinct can backfire when it comes to anxiety. Anxiety often arises from the fear of the unknown, the fear of what might happen in the future. When we try to control every aspect of our lives in an attempt to eliminate uncertainty, we end up creating more anxiety for ourselves. This constant need for certainty can become a vicious cycle that perpetuates our anxiety rather than alleviating it. Embracing uncertainty involves accepting that the future is inherently uncertain and that not everything is within our control. When we let go of the need to have all the answers and surrender to the unknown, we free ourselves from the burden of constantly trying to predict and control every outcome. This shift in mindset can help us break free from the cycle of anxiety and find peace in the present moment. By leaning into uncertainty rather than resisting it, we can learn to tolerate the discomfort that it brings. Instead of viewing uncertainty as a threat, we can see it as an opportunity for growth and self-discovery. When we embrace uncertainty with an open mind and a curious spirit, we create space for new possibilities to emerge. When we stop fighting against uncertainty and start embracing it as an inevitable part of life, we can reduce the anxiety that stems from our constant need for control. By cultivating a mindset of acceptance and openness, we can find freedom from the grip of anxiety and discover a sense of peace and resilience in the face of life's uncertainties.
