Emotions play a crucial role in trauma recovery from "summary" of Trauma and Memory by Peter A. Levine,Ph.D.

Emotions are at the heart of trauma. When we experience a traumatic event, our bodies and minds become overwhelmed by intense feelings that can leave lasting imprints on our psyches. These emotions are not easily forgotten or rationalized away; they linger, affecting our thoughts, behaviors, and relationships long after the traumatic event has passed. In order to recover from trauma, it is essential to work through these emotions. This process is not easy and can be painful, but it is necessary for healing to occur. Emotions serve as guideposts on the path to recovery, helping us to navigate the complex terrain of our trauma and find our way back to a place of wholeness and well-being. When we suppress or ignore our emotions, we are only delaying the healing process. Emotions that are not properly processed can become stuck in our bodies, manifesting as physical symptoms such as chronic pain, digestive issues, and sleep disturbances. By allowing ourselves to feel and express our emotions, we can release this trapped energy and begin to move towards healing. It is important to remember that healing from trauma is a journey, not a destination. There will be ups and downs along the way, but by honoring our emotions and allowing ourselves to feel them fully, we can gradually work through the pain and find a sense of peace and resolution. Emotions are not our enemies; they are our allies in the process of trauma recovery.
