Determinism is an illusion from "summary" of Time and Free Will (Annotated Edition) by Henri Bergson
The belief in determinism stems from our tendency to view the world through a purely quantitative lens, measuring and analyzing events as if they were fixed and unchangeable. This perspective leads us to believe that every action has a predetermined cause, and that the future is already decided based on the past. However, this deterministic view fails to account for the complexity and fluidity of human experience. The illusion of determinism arises from our desire for control and certainty in an uncertain world. We seek to find comfort in the belief that everything is predetermined, that our actions are simply reactions to external forces. But in reality, we are not passive beings at the mercy of fate; we are active agents who have the power to shape our own reality. By recognizing the limitations of determinism and embracing the reality of free will, we can unlock our true potential and live more authentically. We can break free from the chains of determinism and forge our own path, guided by our intuition and creativity. In this way, we can truly experience the fullness of life and all the possibilities it has to offer.
