The practice of Zen involves letting go of attachments from "summary" of The Way of Zen by Alan Watts

The practice of Zen involves a radical transformation of consciousness, a shift from focusing on the self to recognizing the interconnectedness of all things. Central to this transformation is the idea of letting go of attachments, which are obstacles that prevent us from experiencing reality as it truly is. Attachments can take many forms, such as material possessions, relationships, or even ideas and beliefs. These attachments create a sense of separateness and division, leading to suffering and discontent. By letting go of attachments, we free ourselves from the constraints of the ego and open ourselves to a deeper experience of reality. This process of letting go is not about denying or repressing our desires, but rather about recognizing the transient and insubstantial nature of all things. It is about learning to appreciate the present moment without being burdened by thoughts of the past or worries about the future. In Zen practice, we cultivate a state of mindfulness and awareness that allows us to see through the illusions of the ego and perceive the interconnectedness of all things. This awareness enables us to let go of attachments and experience a sense of liberation and freedom. Through the practice of meditation and mindfulness, we learn to observe our thoughts and emotions without becoming attached to them. We develop a sense of detachment that allows us to let go of our habitual patterns of thinking and behaving. In this way, we become more open and receptive to the ever-changing nature of reality.
  1. The practice of Zen is about realizing our true nature, which is beyond the limitations of the ego and the illusions of the material world. It is about letting go of attachments and embracing the boundless and interconnected nature of existence.
