Nonverbal cues can shape organizational culture from "summary" of The Silent Language of Leaders by Carol Kinsey Goman,Ph.D.

Nonverbal cues play a critical role in shaping organizational culture. These cues are the silent messages that leaders send to employees, and they can have a powerful impact on the overall work environment. Leaders may not realize it, but their nonverbal signals can significantly influence how employees feel about their jobs, their colleagues, and the organization as a whole. For example, a leader who consistently avoids eye contact with employees may unintentionally communicate a lack of interest or respect. This can create a culture where employees feel undervalued and disconnected from their leader. On the other hand, a leader who makes a point to maintain eye contact and display open body language can foster a culture of trust and open communication. Nonverbal cues can also shape the way employees interact with one another. A leader who frequently interrupts others during meetings may unknowingly encourage a culture of disrespect and competition among team members. Conversely, a leader who actively listens and acknowledges the contributions of others can promote a culture of collaboration and mutual respect. In addition to influencing individual behavior, nonverbal cues can also impact larger organizational dynamics. For example, a leader who consistently displays confidence and enthusiasm through their body language can inspire employees to feel more engaged and motivated. This can create a culture of innovation and forward momentum within the organization.
  1. The nonverbal cues that leaders send can have a ripple effect throughout the entire organization. By being mindful of their body language, facial expressions, and gestures, leaders can intentionally shape a positive and productive organizational culture where employees feel valued, respected, and motivated to do their best work.
