Nonverbal communication plays a role in building relationships from "summary" of The Silent Language of Leaders by Carol Kinsey Goman,Ph.D.

Nonverbal communication is a powerful tool that leaders can use to build relationships with their teams. Our nonverbal cues, such as facial expressions, gestures, and body language, often communicate more than our words do. In fact, research shows that nonverbal signals can make up as much as 93% of our overall communication. This means that our nonverbal behavior can have a significant impact on how others perceive us and how they feel about us. When leaders are able to effectively use nonverbal communication to build relationships, they are better able to establish trust, inspire confidence, and foster connection with their teams. For example, making eye contact, offering a genuine smile, and using open body language can make team members feel valued and respected. On the other hand, avoiding eye contact, frowning, or crossing one's arms can create barriers and distance in relationships. Nonverbal communication also plays a crucial role in conveying emotions and intentions. Leaders who are able to accurately read and interpret the nonverbal cues of others can better understand their team members' needs, concerns, and motivations. By being attuned to nonverbal signals, leaders can respond more effectively, show empathy, and demonstrate their commitment to their team's well-being. Additionally, nonverbal communication can help leaders establish their presence and authority. By using confident posture, firm handshakes, and strong, steady eye contact, leaders can project a sense of competence and credibility. This can help to build respect and admiration among team members, making it easier for leaders to influence and inspire their teams.
  1. Nonverbal communication is a vital aspect of building relationships as a leader. By paying attention to our own nonverbal cues and being mindful of the nonverbal signals of others, leaders can create stronger connections, foster trust, and establish a positive and supportive team dynamic.
