Genes shape physical and behavioral traits from "summary" of The Selfish Gene by Richard Dawkins,Charles Simonyi Professor of the Public Understanding of Science Richard Dawkins,David Dawkins,RICHARD AUTOR DAWKINS

Genes are the fundamental units of heredity. They contain the instructions for building and maintaining an organism. Through the process of natural selection, genes that produce traits advantageous for survival and reproduction are more likely to be passed on to future generations. As a result, genes play a crucial role in shaping both physical and behavioral traits. Physical traits are the observable characteristics of an organism, such as its height, hair color, or eye shape. These traits are determined by the combination of genes inherited from an organism's parents. For example, a gene for brown hair will result in an individual having brown hair, while a gene for blue eyes will result in an individual having blue eyes. Behavioral traits, on the other hand, refer to the actions and reactions of an organism in response to its environment. These traits are also influenced by genes. For instance, a gene that predisposes an individual to aggression may result in that individual being more likely to exhibit aggressive behavior in certain situations. It is important to note that genes do not determine traits in a straightforward, one-to-one manner. Rather, genes interact with each other and with the environment to produce a wide range of physical and behavioral traits. This complexity arises from the fact that genes code for proteins, which in turn interact with each other to produce the traits we observe. Furthermore, genes are not static entities that remain fixed throughout an organism's life. Instead, they can be turned on or off in response to environmental cues, a process known as gene expression. This flexibility allows organisms to adapt to changing conditions and maximize their chances of survival and reproduction. In summary, genes play a central role in shaping both physical and behavioral traits. Through the process of natural selection, genes that produce advantageous traits are more likely to be passed on to future generations. This results in a continuous evolution of organisms with traits that are well-suited to their environments.
