The road to character involves a constant battle with our own egos from "summary" of The Road to Character by David Brooks

The central idea of this concept is that as we strive to build character, we are inevitably faced with the challenge of confronting our own egos. Ego, as defined by many psychologists, is the part of our consciousness that is responsible for our sense of self-importance and self-worth. It is the part of us that craves attention, recognition, and validation from others. Our egos often lead us astray, causing us to prioritize our own desires and needs above those of others. They can blind us to our faults and weaknesses, preventing us from developing true humility and empathy. In order to cultivate a strong and virtuous character, we must learn to recognize and overcome the influence of our egos. This battle with our egos is not a one-time event, but a constant struggle that we must engage in throughout our lives. It requires us to be vigilant and self-aware, constantly questioning our motives and actions. It demands that we set aside our own desires and ambitions in favor of serving a higher purpose or greater good.
  1. The road to character is a journey of self-discovery and self-transcendence. It requires us to look beyond ourselves and our own selfish interests, to connect with something greater than ourselves. By overcoming our egos and cultivating virtues such as humility, compassion, and integrity, we can become the best versions of ourselves and make a positive impact on the world around us.
