Furthermore, genetic diversity can increase the overall fitness of a population by reducing the prevalence of harmful genetic mutations. In a genetically homogeneous population, deleterious mutations are more likely to become fixed, leading to reduced survival and reproductive success. By contrast, in a genetically diverse population, these mutations are less likely to spread, as they are more likely to be masked by beneficial alleles from other individuals.
