In the perpetual competition for reproductive success, organisms engage in an evolutionary arms race that drives the escalation of traits. This phenomenon, known as the Red Queen hypothesis, posits that organisms must constantly evolve to keep up with the changing traits of their rivals. As organisms develop advantageous traits to outcompete others, their competitors must also evolve to survive and reproduce. The escalation of traits occurs as a result of the competitive nature of evolution. When one organism develops a beneficial trait, such as faster speed or stronger defenses, other organisms in the same ecological niche must adapt to compete effectively.
