Tony fakes his symptoms to get locked up. It starts when he's seventeen. He feels lonely and depressed, so he goes to the doctor. The doctor gives him a form to fill out about his feelings. Tony writes that he hears voices, that he believes he has a special connection to God. He's taken to a mental hospital and is relieved to be there. It's a community, a place where he feels safe. He doesn't want to leave. So he starts pretending to have symptoms he doesn't really have. He tells the doctors he's suicidal, that he hears voices telling him to hurt people.
