Full engagement requires optimal physical energy from "summary" of The Power of Full Engagement by James E. Loehr,Jim Loehr,Tony Schwartz

To sustain full engagement, we must learn to better manage our physical energy. Physical capacity is the fundamental source of all energy. It is the core energy that fuels our lives. Without the right quantity, quality, focus, and force of energy, we are compromised in any activity we undertake. The number of hours in a day is fixed, but the quantity and quality of energy available to us are not. This is the most underappreciated determinant of high performance. Optimal physical energy is the key to full engagement. The body is the foundation of the performance. To address our bodies more comprehensively, we need to consider the four separate but related dimensions of physical capacity: endurance, strength, flexibility, and resilience. The core of physical energy is defined by our sleep, our rest and relaxation, our eating habits, and our physical fitness. We must learn to balance energy expenditure with intermittent energy renewal. The ultimate measure of our lives is not how much time we spend on the planet, but rather how much energy we invest in the time that we have. We must learn to balance stress and recovery. Stress is not the enemy in our lives. Paradoxically, it is the key to growth. The human energy system is designed to oscillate between energy expenditure and energy renewal. To build emotional, mental, and spiritual capacity, we must learn to balance stress with intermittent rest and renewal. By carefully managing our energy, we can experience sustained high performance in all areas of our lives. Physical energy is the fundamental source of fuel for full engagement. We must learn to optimize our physical energy through balanced energy expenditure and renewal. By understanding the importance of physical capacity and the need to balance stress and recovery, we can achieve full engagement in all aspects of our lives. It is through the management of our physical energy that we can truly unlock our full potential and live a life of sustained high performance.
