Too many choices can lead to decision paralysis from "summary" of The Paradox of Choice by Barry Schwartz

When faced with an abundance of choices, we may assume that more options will lead to increased satisfaction. However, the reality is quite different. Having too many choices can actually overwhelm us and make it difficult to make a decision. This phenomenon is known as decision paralysis. Decision paralysis occurs when the sheer number of choices available to us leads to anxiety and stress, making it challenging to choose one option over another. Research has shown that when faced with too many choices, individuals often struggle to make a decision and may end up feeling dissatisfied with their choice, or even regretful. The problem with having an excess of choices is that it can lead to an endless cycle of comparison and evaluation. We may find ourselves constantly weighing the pros and cons of each option, second-guessing our decisions, and worrying about making the wrong choice. This mental burden can be draining and can ultimately hinder our ability to make a clear, confident decision. Moreover, having too many choices can also lead to a fear of missing out, or FOMO. When we are presented with numerous options, we may worry that we are passing up better opportunities by choosing one over the others. This fear can further exacerbate decision paralysis and make it even more challenging to commit to a choice.
  1. Decision paralysis is a cognitive overload that occurs when the number of choices overwhelms our ability to process information effectively. To combat decision paralysis, it is important to simplify our options and focus on what truly matters to us. By narrowing down our choices to a few meaningful options, we can alleviate the stress and anxiety that come with too many choices and make more confident decisions.
