More choices do not necessarily result in more satisfaction from "summary" of The Paradox of Choice by Barry Schwartz

The prevailing wisdom in modern society is that more choices lead to greater satisfaction. We are told that having a wide array of options allows us to select the perfect match for our preferences and desires. However, this assumption is not always true. In fact, research has shown that an abundance of choices can often lead to anxiety, indecision, and ultimately, dissatisfaction. When faced with an overwhelming number of options, individuals may experience decision paralysis. The fear of making the wrong choice can be paralyzing, causing individuals to either avoid making a decision altogether or to second-guess themselves constantly. This lack of confidence in one's choices can erode the sense of satisfaction that comes from making a decision. Moreover, having numerous options can lead to unrealistic expectations. When there are so many possibilities available, individuals may set their standards unreasonably high, believing that the perfect choice is out there somewhere. As a result, even if they do make a decision, they may find themselves disappointed when the chosen option fails to live up to their lofty expectations. Additionally, the process of comparing and evaluating multiple options can be exhausting and time-consuming. The mental effort required to weigh the pros and cons of each choice can be draining, leaving individuals feeling mentally fatigued and overwhelmed. This cognitive overload can detract from the enjoyment and satisfaction that should come from making a decision.
  1. The idea that more choices lead to greater satisfaction is a myth. While options can be beneficial in some contexts, too many choices can have a detrimental impact on individuals' well-being. By recognizing the pitfalls of excessive choice and learning to embrace limitations, individuals can cultivate a greater sense of contentment and fulfillment in their decision-making processes.
