Time in nature helps to alleviate mental fatigue from "summary" of The Nature Fix: Why Nature Makes Us Happier, Healthier, and More Creative by Florence Williams

Time in nature can be a powerful antidote to the mental fatigue that plagues many of us in the modern world. Our brains are constantly bombarded with information and stimuli, leading to a state of cognitive overload. This can leave us feeling mentally exhausted, unable to focus, and prone to anxiety and depression. When we spend time in nature, however, our brains are able to relax and unwind. The sights, sounds, and smells of the natural world have a calming effect on our minds, helping to reduce stress and improve our mood. Studies have shown that spending time in nature can lower levels of cortisol, the stress hormone, and increase levels of serotonin, the "feel-good" neurotransmitter. In addition to its calming effects, nature also has a restorative quality that can help to replenish our mental energy. Attention Restoration Theory suggests that spending time in natural environments can give our overworked brains a chance to recover from the demands of everyday life. One reason for this is that nature engages our attention in a gentle, effortless way. Unlike the constant demands of technology and urban environments, the natural world doesn't require us to actively focus or make decisions. Instead, we can simply be present in the moment, observing the beauty around us without feeling the need to respond or react. This state of "soft fascination" allows our brains to enter a mode of rest and relaxation, which can help to alleviate mental fatigue and improve cognitive function. Whether it's a walk in the woods, a day at the beach, or simply sitting in a park, spending time in nature can provide a much-needed break for our busy minds.
