In the marshmallow test, children who were able to resist eating the marshmallow immediately in order to receive a bigger reward later on were found to have better self-control. This ability to delay gratification is a key component of self-control, which plays a crucial role in determining success in various aspects of life. One way to improve self-control is by building self-awareness. By being more aware of our thoughts, emotions, and behaviors, we can better understand our impulses and tendencies. This self-awareness allows us to recognize when we are being impulsive and make a conscious effort to resist immediate temptations for the sake of long-term goals. For example, in the marshmallow test, children who distracted themselves by covering their eyes, sitting on their hands, or turning away from the marshmallow were able to resist eating it. This self-awareness of their own tendencies and the strategies they could use to resist temptation helped them exercise better self-control. Moreover, self-awareness helps us identify our triggers – the situations, emotions, or thoughts that lead us to act impulsively. By recognizing these triggers, we can proactively avoid or address them, reducing the likelihood of succumbing to impulsive behavior.- Building self-awareness is like shining a light on our own minds, allowing us to see our thoughts and impulses more clearly.
