The Marshmallow Test: Mastering Self-Control by Walter Mischel is an exploration of self-control and the power of delayed gratification. Mischel examines data from his famous “marshmallow study”—an experiment with young children who were asked to choose between receiving one marshmallow immediately or two if they waited a few minutes—and introduces new psychological findings that reveal the importance of self-control in predicting success in life. He investigates experiments in self-control, such as the “hot-and-cold-turkey” project, in which a group of students attempt to break a habit; and he looks at how the self-control skills of children can be improved. He also explores the science of addictive behavior and impulse control. Mischel discusses how people can increase their self-control to foster better habits, healthier decision-making, and greater success.
