Information overload hinders our ability to learn from "summary" of The Internet of Us: Knowing More and Understanding Less in the Age of Big Data by Michael P. Lynch

In our digital age, we are constantly bombarded with information from various sources. The sheer volume of data available to us can be overwhelming, making it difficult to sift through and process everything that comes our way. This phenomenon, known as information overload, can have a detrimental effect on our ability to learn. When we are faced with an excessive amount of information, our cognitive abilities become strained. We are forced to divide our attention among multiple sources, making it challenging to focus on any one piece of information in depth. As a result, our ability to retain and comprehend new knowledge is hindered. Instead of gaining a deep understanding of a subject, we are left with a superficial grasp of many different topics. Furthermore, information overload can lead to cognitive fatigue. As we attempt to process an endless stream of data, our brains become exhausted, making it even more difficult to learn effectively. This mental exhaustion can result in decreased motivation and engagement with the material, further impeding our ability to learn. In addition, the constant influx of information can make it challenging to discern between reliable sources and misinformation. With so much content available online, it can be difficult to separate fact from fiction. This can lead to confusion and misunderstanding, further inhibiting our ability to learn and acquire accurate knowledge.
  1. Information overload poses a significant barrier to our ability to learn and understand the world around us. By inundating ourselves with an excess of information, we risk sacrificing depth of knowledge for breadth, hindering our capacity to truly engage with and comprehend the subjects we encounter. As we navigate the vast sea of data available to us, it is crucial to be mindful of the potential pitfalls of information overload and to approach learning with a discerning eye.
