Material desires lead to bondage from "summary" of The Holy Science by Swami Sri Yukteswar

Material desires, arising from the delusion that happiness can be found in external objects, lead to bondage. This bondage is caused by attachment to the temporary pleasures of the material world, which can never truly satisfy the soul. When one becomes attached to material possessions, one's consciousness becomes limited and focused on the physical realm, leading to a state of ignorance and forgetfulness of one's true nature. The pursuit of material desires creates a cycle of desire and dissatisfaction, as one seeks more and more in an attempt to fill the void within. This perpetual seeking only serves to further entangle the individual in the illusion of the material world, preventing them from realizing their spiritual potential. The more one indulges in material desires, the more one becomes bound by them, unable to break free from the chains of attachment. In order to transcend this cycle of bondage, one must cultivate detachment and focus on spiritual growth. By turning inward and seeking fulfillment from within, rather than from external sources, one can free themselves from the grip of material desires and attain true liberation. The path to liberation lies in renouncing the pursuit of temporary pleasures and aligning oneself with the divine purpose of self-realization. When one is able to overcome the lure of material desires and recognize the futility of seeking happiness in external objects, one can break free from the chains of bondage and experience true freedom. By redirecting one's focus towards spiritual growth and self-realization, one can transcend the limitations of the material world and attain a state of lasting peace and fulfillment.
