Our minds are divided into different parts that can work together or against each other from "summary" of The Happiness Hypothesis by Jonathan Haidt

Our minds are not a single, unified entity, but rather a collection of different parts that can work together or against each other. These parts can be thought of as different psychological systems with different goals and priorities. For example, the rider represents conscious reasoning and planning, while the elephant represents automatic processes and emotions. The rider may have goals and intentions, but the elephant is much larger and stronger, often overpowering the rider's attempts to control it. This is why we sometimes act in ways that go against our own best interests - our rational mind may want to eat healthily, but our emotional mind craves junk food. Additionally, these different parts of the mind can be in conflict with each other, leading to inner turmoil and indecision. For example, we may feel torn between the desire to achieve a long-term goal and the temptation of immediate gratification. This internal conflict can lead to stress, anxiety, and unhappiness.
  1. When these different parts of the mind work together in harmony, they can lead to greater resilience, well-being, and happiness. By understanding and acknowledging the different parts of our minds, we can learn to better navigate our internal landscape and make choices that align with our values and goals. Ultimately, by fostering cooperation between the different parts of our minds, we can cultivate a sense of inner peace and contentment.
