Agreement 2: Don't take anything personally from "summary" of The Four Agreements by Don Miguel Ruiz,Janet Mills

When we take things personally, we make the assumption that everything is about "me." We assume that what others say and do is a direct response to us, when in reality, it has nothing to do with us at all. People's actions and words are a projection of their own reality, their own dream. When we take things personally, we are easily offended and hurt because we believe that others are attacking us. In reality, nothing others do is because of us. It is because of themselves. Their actions and words are a reflection of their own beliefs, opinions, and emotions. When we truly understand this, we can free ourselves from the unnecessary suffering that comes from taking things personally. By not taking things personally, we can avoid many conflicts and misunderstandings. We can maintain our inner peace and serenity because we are not allowing external events to disturb our internal state. When we let go of the need for approval and validation from others, we can find true freedom and happiness within ourselves. When we stop taking things personally, we can also break free from the need to react defensively. We no longer feel the urge to defend ourselves or prove our worth to others. We can simply observe and let go of the negative energy that comes from others, knowing that it is not a reflection of who we are.
  1. By not taking things personally, we can live a more authentic and empowered life. We can let go of the need to seek external validation and approval, and instead, find our own sense of self-worth and confidence from within. We can be immune to the opinions and actions of others, knowing that they do not define us. Instead, we can focus on living in alignment with our true selves and cultivating our own inner peace and happiness.
