Traditional discipline methods are not effective. In other words, the typical strategies that parents and teachers often rely on when children misbehave - such as time-outs, loss of privileges, or even harsh punishments - are not getting the job done. This is a central premise of the Collaborative and Proactive Solutions (CPS) model, which is the alternative approach to managing challenging behavior that I propose in this book. One of the main reasons why traditional discipline methods fail is that they do not address the underlying causes of a child's challenging behavior. Punishments may temporarily suppress the behavior, but they do not teach the child how to regulate their emotions, solve problems, or communicate effectively. Furthermore, these methods can strain the parent-child or teacher-student relationship, leading to even more conflict and resistance. Another key point to consider is that traditional discipline methods are based on the assumption that children will do better if they just try harder. However, this overlooks the fact that some children lack the skills needed to meet expectations. For these kids, simply punishing them for their behavior is not going to help them learn and grow. It's like expecting a child with a broken leg to run a marathon - it's just not realistic or fair. The CPS model takes a different approach by focusing on collaboration and problem-solving. Instead of imposing consequences, adults work with the child to identify the specific triggers that lead to challenging behavior and come up with solutions together. This approach not only helps address the root causes of the behavior but also empowers the child to develop the skills they need to handle similar situations in the future.- Adults can shift their perspective and approach the child with empathy and compassion. This sets the stage for meaningful dialogue and collaboration, which are much more effective in promoting long-term behavior change than punishment and coercion. Ultimately, the goal is to help children learn and grow in a way that respects their dignity and supports their development.
