Stoicism emphasized selfcontrol and acceptance of fate from "summary" of The Dream of Reason by Anthony Gottlieb

Stoicism, a philosophy originating in ancient Greece, placed a strong emphasis on the importance of self-control and the acceptance of one's fate. Followers of Stoicism believed that the key to leading a virtuous life lay in mastering one's emotions and desires, and in learning to accept whatever life threw their way with equanimity. This philosophy encouraged individuals to cultivate a sense of inner calm and resilience, even in the face of adversity. The Stoics believed that by practicing self-control and discipline, one could achieve a state of inner tranquility and peace of mind. They viewed emotions such as anger, fear, and desire as obstacles to living a good life, and sought to overcome them through reason and rationality. By learning to control their impulses and reactions, Stoics believed that they could free themselves from the tyranny of their emotions and achieve a sense of inner freedom. Central to the philosophy of Stoicism was the idea of accepting one's fate with grace and dignity. Stoics believed that everything in life happened for a reason, and that it was essential to learn to accept the things that were beyond one's control. By embracing the concept of fate, Stoics sought to cultivate a sense of detachment from external circumstances and to focus instead on developing their inner virtues.
  1. Stoics believed that they could navigate life's ups and downs with grace and dignity. Ultimately, the goal of Stoicism was to help individuals lead a life of virtue, wisdom, and inner peace, regardless of the challenges they faced.
