Medications are not the best solution for type 2 diabetes from "summary" of The Diabetes Code by Dr. Jason Fung

The prevailing medical treatment for type 2 diabetes is to prescribe medications. Doctors typically start with metformin and then add other medications as needed to control blood sugar levels. But this approach merely masks the symptoms of the disease without addressing the root cause. It is like trying to put out a fire by blowing on the flames instead of cutting off the oxygen supply. Medications may lower blood sugar levels temporarily, but they do not reverse the underlying insulin resistance that is the hallmark of type 2 diabetes. As a result, patients often find themselves needing higher and higher doses of medications to achieve the same effect. This is because the body becomes less sensitive to insulin over time, leading to a vicious cycle of increasing medication doses and worsening insulin resistance. Furthermore, medications come with a host of side effects that can be debilitating. From gastrointestinal issues to weight gain to an increased risk of heart disease, the list of potential side effects is long and concerning. It is ironic that the very medications prescribed to improve health can actually have harmful effects on the body. Instead of relying solely on medications, it is important to address the root cause of type 2 diabetes: insulin resistance. By adopting a low-carbohydrate diet, intermittent fasting, and regular exercise, it is possible to reverse insulin resistance and improve blood sugar control without the need for medications. These lifestyle changes can not only help manage diabetes but also improve overall health and well-being.
  1. While medications may have a role to play in the short term, they are not the best solution for type 2 diabetes. By focusing on addressing insulin resistance through lifestyle changes, it is possible to achieve lasting improvements in health and well-being.
