Leadership styles are influenced by cultural norms from "summary" of The Culture Map (INTL ED) by Erin Meyer

Leadership styles vary significantly across cultures. For example, in some cultures, leaders are expected to be authoritative and make decisions independently, while in others, leaders are more consultative, seeking input from their team before reaching a decision. These differences in leadership styles are influenced by cultural norms that dictate how individuals in a particular culture should behave in positions of authority. In hierarchical cultures, such as those in Asia and Latin America, leaders are expected to maintain a sense of distance from their subordinates and make decisions independently. This is because these cultures value respect for authority and believe that leaders should have the final say in all matters. As a result, leaders in hierarchical cultures tend to be more directive and less collaborative in their approach. On the other hand, in egalitarian cultures, such as those in Northern Europe and North America, leaders are expected to be more democratic and consultative in their decision-making process. In these cultures, there is a greater emphasis on teamwork and consensus-building, so leaders are encouraged to seek input from their team members before making a decision. As a result, leaders in egalitarian cultures tend to be less directive and more collaborative in their approach. The influence of cultural norms on leadership styles can also be seen in how leaders communicate with their team members. In some cultures, direct communication is valued, and leaders are expected to be clear and explicit in their instructions. In other cultures, indirect communication is preferred, and leaders are expected to be more subtle and nuanced in their interactions. These differences in communication styles are a reflection of the broader cultural norms that shape how individuals in a particular culture express themselves and interact with others.
  1. The concept that leadership styles are influenced by cultural norms highlights the importance of understanding and adapting to different cultural expectations when leading a team with members from diverse cultural backgrounds. By recognizing how cultural norms shape leadership styles, leaders can navigate cultural differences more effectively and build stronger, more cohesive teams.
