Modern society's obsession with comfort is unsustainable from "summary" of The Comfort Crisis by Michael Easter

Our insatiable desire for comfort has led us down a precarious path towards unsustainability. We have become accustomed to a life of ease and convenience, where every need and desire is instantly gratified at the touch of a button. Our homes are climate-controlled havens, our food is delivered to our doorsteps with a few taps on a screen, and our bodies are cosseted in plush chairs and beds. In our quest for comfort, we have insulated ourselves from the natural world and the challenges it presents. We have lost touch with the rhythms of the seasons, the feel of the earth beneath our feet, and the bracing shock of cold water on our skin. We have forgotten what it means to be truly alive, connected to the world around us and engaged in the struggle for survival that defines all living creatures. Our obsession with comfort has not only disconnected us from nature but has also taken a toll on our physical and mental well-being. Our bodies have become soft and weak from lack of movement and exposure to discomfort. Our minds have grown flabby from constant stimulation and the absence of challenge. We have lost the resilience and adaptability that are the hallmarks of a healthy, vibrant life. If we continue on this path of comfort-seeking, we will inevitably reach a point where our resources are exhausted, our health is compromised, and our very survival is at stake. We must learn to embrace discomfort, to seek out challenges and obstacles that will test our strength and resilience. Only by stepping outside of our comfort zones can we truly grow and thrive in a world that is constantly changing and evolving.
