Courage is necessary to break free from oppression from "summary" of The Color Purple by Alice Walker
Throughout the novel, the characters face various forms of oppression that weigh heavily on their spirits. From the abuse inflicted by their loved ones to the societal constraints placed upon them, the characters must summon their inner courage to break free from the clutches of oppression. Celie, the protagonist, endures years of abuse and mistreatment at the hands of her stepfather and husband. Despite these hardships, it is her courage that ultimately allows her to rise above her circumstances and assert her independence. Through her newfound strength and resilience, Celie is able to break free from the oppressive forces that have held her captive for so long. Similarly, Sofia, another character in the novel, faces oppression in the form of racism and sexism. As an African American woman living in the South during the early 20th century, Sofia is constantly subjected to degrading treatment and discrimination. However, it is her unwavering courage and defiance in the face of adversity that empowers her to stand up against her oppressors and reclaim her dignity. In a broader sense, the concept of courage as a means of breaking free from oppression is a recurring theme in the novel. Whether it be through acts of resistance, self-empowerment, or simply refusing to conform to societal norms, the characters demonstrate that courage is essential in overcoming the various forms of oppression that they face.- The characters in "The Color Purple" serve as a powerful reminder of the transformative power of courage in the face of adversity. By summoning their inner strength and refusing to be silenced, they are able to transcend their oppressive circumstances and forge their own paths towards freedom and self-empowerment.
