The Color Purple is a 1982 epistolary novel by Alice Walker that tells the story of Celie, a young African-American woman living in the Southern United States in the early 20th century. After suffering a lifetime of abuse and oppression, Celie discovers her own self-worth and strength when she meets Shug Avery, an independent, charismatic blues singer. Through self-discovery and acceptance of her own power, Celie discovers her voice and sense of identity, and eventually takes a stand against the oppressive men controlling every aspect of her life. The book deals with themes of racism, sexism, and personal relationships, both social and romantic. The Color Purple won the 1983 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction and has been adapted several times in different mediums, including a 1985 film and an acclaimed Broadway musical.
