Letting go of attachments reduces suffering and increases joy from "summary" of The Buddha's Way of Happiness by Thomas Bien

Attachment often manifests as a deep craving for people, possessions, or experiences. This yearning can lead to profound dissatisfaction, as the impermanence of life makes it impossible to hold onto anything forever. When clinging to these desires, individuals inadvertently invite suffering into their lives. The more one grasps at fleeting joys, the greater the anguish when they inevitably fade away. Recognizing the transient nature of all things allows for a shift in perspective. Instead of seeking fulfillment through external means, embracing the present moment becomes essential. This practice cultivates a sense of inner peace, where joy arises from within rather than from the external world. By releasing the need to possess or control, individuals can experience life with greater clarity and appreciation. This process of detachment does not imply indifference or apathy. Rather, it encourages a loving openness to experiences and relationships without the burden of ownership or expectation. Such an approach fosters genuine connections and a deeper understanding of oneself and others. When expectations are diminished, the heart becomes more receptive to the beauty of life that exists in each moment.
  1. The capacity to adapt and find joy amidst adversity strengthens. The emotional weight previously tied to possessions or experiences dissipates, making room for a more profound sense of contentment. Each moment becomes an opportunity to engage fully with the ebb and flow of existence, enhancing the overall quality of life. Embracing this philosophy ultimately leads to a more harmonious existence, where joy flourishes in the absence of clinging.
