Let go of the past and future to find peace in the present from "summary" of THE BOOK OF BUDDHA by Arundhati Subramaniam
In the teachings of Buddha, there is a profound insight into the nature of human suffering. The root cause of our inner turmoil often lies in our attachment to the past and our anxieties about the future. Our minds are constantly occupied with regrets about what has already happened or worries about what is yet to come. This preoccupation with what is not here and now prevents us from fully experiencing the present moment. Buddha invites us to let go of our attachment to the past and future in order to find peace in the present. By releasing our grip on what has already transpired and what is yet to unfold, we free ourselves from the burden of regret and anxiety. We allow ourselves to fully immerse in the richness of the present moment, with all its joys and sorrows, its triumphs and challenges. When we let go of the past and future, we open ourselves up to the beauty and wonder of the present. We become more attuned to the sights, sounds, and sensations that surround us. We are able to appreciate the simple pleasures of life – a gentle breeze, a warm embrace, a shared laughter. We are able to engage more deeply with the people around us, to listen more attentively, to connect more authentically. In letting go of the past and future, we also free ourselves from the cycle of desire and aversion that often traps us in a state of perpetual dissatisfaction. We learn to accept the impermanence of life, to embrace the ebb and flow of joy and sorrow, success and failure. We cultivate a sense of equanimity that allows us to navigate life's ups and downs with grace and resilience.- By releasing our attachment to the past and future, we come to realize that true peace and contentment can only be found in the present moment. It is here, in the eternal now, that we discover the profound truth of our interconnectedness with all beings and all things. It is here that we find liberation from the bondage of time and space, and enter into a state of profound inner peace and freedom.
