Reframe disability as a natural part of the human experience from "summary" of The Body Is Not an Apology by Sonya Renee Taylor

The idea that disability is something abnormal, something to be fixed or cured, is deeply ingrained in our society. We are taught to see disability as something to be pitied, something to be hidden away or overcome. But what if we were to shift our perspective? What if we were to see disability not as a flaw, but as a natural variation of the human experience? When we reframe disability as a natural part of the human experience, we are able to celebrate the diversity of the human body and mind. We begin to see that there is no one "normal" way to exist in the world, no one way to move, communicate, or experience the world around us. Disability becomes just another way of being, just another way of living and thriving in the world. By embracing disability as a natural part of the human experience, we can begin to break down the barriers that exist between disabled and non-disabled people. We can create a more inclusive society, one that values and celebrates the contributions of all its members, regardless of their abilities or differences. When we see disability as a natural part of the human experience, we can begin to challenge the ableist beliefs and attitudes that have been ingrained in our society for so long. We can start to dismantle the systems of oppression that have kept disabled people marginalized and excluded.
  1. Reframing disability as a natural part of the human experience is about embracing the full diversity of the human race. It is about recognizing that there is no one "normal" way to exist in the world, and that our differences are what make us strong. It is about creating a world where all people are valued and included, regardless of their abilities or differences.
