Beauty ideals are imposed on women from a young age from "summary" of The Beauty Myth by Naomi Wolf
From the moment a girl is born, society begins to teach her about the importance of beauty. From the color of her nursery walls to the clothes she wears, everything around her reinforces the idea that her appearance is her most valuable asset. As she grows older, this message only becomes louder and more persistent. Advertisements, movies, television shows, and magazines bombard her with images of flawless, airbrushed women who embody society's impossible standards of beauty. As she enters adolescence, the pressure to conform to these standards intensifies. Peer groups become the primary source of validation, and girls quickly learn that their worth is tied to their ability to attract male attention. They are told that their value as individuals is directly proportional to their physical attractiveness, and that any deviation from the narrow definition of beauty is a sign of failure. This message is so ingrained in our culture that it is almost impossible to escape. The consequences of this relentless focus on beauty are profound. Girls grow up believing that they must constantly strive to achieve an ideal that is unattainable for most. They spend hours in front of the mirror, picking apart their flaws and obsessing over their imperfections. They develop unhealthy relationships with food and exercise, resorting to extreme measures to fit into a mold that was never meant for them. The beauty industry preys on these insecurities, offering a never-ending array of products and services promising to help women achieve the unattainable. From diet pills to plastic surgery, women are bombarded with messages that tell them they are not good enough as they are. The result is a cycle of self-loathing and self-doubt that is difficult to break.- The message that beauty ideals are imposed on women from a young age is a toxic one. It robs women of their agency and their sense of self-worth, reducing them to mere objects to be admired and desired. Until we are able to challenge and dismantle these ideals, women will continue to be trapped in a never-ending cycle of striving for an unattainable standard of beauty.
