Love is an art that requires knowledge and effort from "summary" of The Art of Loving by Erich Fromm

Love, the most profound experience in life, is often seen as a magical and effortless emotion that just happens to people. However, this view is misleading and unrealistic. Love is not something that can be achieved without effort; it is an art that requires knowledge, practice, and dedication. In our society, love is often misunderstood as a feeling that either arises spontaneously or not at all. People tend to believe that if they do not feel love towards someone, then there is nothing they can do about it. This passive view of love overlooks the fact that love is a skill that can be learned and perfected over time. To truly love someone, one must first have a deep understanding of themselves. This self-awareness is crucial in order to be able to give and receive love in a healthy way. Without this knowledge of oneself, it is nearly impossible to form a genuine connection with another person. Furthermore, love requires effort in order to be sustained. Just like any other skill, love must be practiced and nurtured in order to grow. This means actively working on the relationship, communicating openly and honestly, and making an effort to understand and support your partner.
  1. Love is not something that can be taken for granted. It is a continuous process that requires constant attention and care. By approaching love as an art that requires knowledge and effort, one can cultivate deep and meaningful connections with others, leading to a more fulfilling and enriching life.
