Loving oneself is the foundation of happiness from "summary" of The Art of Happiness by Dalai Lama XIV Bstan-ʼdzin-rgya-mtsho,Howard C. Cutler
The concept of loving oneself as the foundation of happiness is a fundamental principle that underlies the teachings of the Dalai Lama. According to him, true happiness can only be achieved when we have a deep sense of love and compassion for ourselves. This may seem counterintuitive to some, as we are often taught to prioritize the needs and wants of others above our own. However, the Dalai Lama argues that unless we learn to love and accept ourselves unconditionally, we will never be able to experience true happiness. This is because our relationship with ourselves forms the basis of all other relationships in our lives. If we are constantly self-critical and judgmental, we carry that negativity into our interactions with others. On the other hand, when we cultivate a sense of self-love and self-compassion, we are better able to show love and compassion to others. This is because we can only give to others what we already possess within ourselves. When we are kind and gentle with ourselves, we naturally extend that kindness and gentleness to those around us. Furthermore, loving oneself is not about being selfish or egotistical. It is about recognizing our inherent worth and treating ourselves with the same care and respect that we would give to a beloved friend or family member. This self-love allows us to set healthy boundaries, prioritize self-care, and pursue our passions and interests without guilt or shame.- Loving oneself is the key to unlocking the door to true happiness. When we learn to love and accept ourselves for who we are, flaws and all, we free ourselves from the burden of self-doubt and insecurity. We can then live authentically, fully present in the moment, and open to the joys and challenges that life has to offer.
